The main goal of biofeedback is to make physical changes visible. When combined with modern VR therapy – especially in VR exposures – entirely new possibilities arise in the psychotherapeutic context. This is because physical changes occur very quickly during the intense emotional activation of the VR experience. It creates measurable comparison and target values – an exciting process for
The self-assessment of patients – for example, on scales from zero to ten – remains an important tool in psychotherapy. The goal is not to replace this with biofeedback, but to complement it meaningfully. The objective measurement data provides an additional layer that remains independent of the patient’s thoughts, uncertainties, or social influences.
Especially in patients with substance use disorders, impaired body awareness can make self-assessment difficult. Patients with anxiety disorders, on the other hand, may attempt to meet the expectations of the therapy team. Objective biofeedback measurement largely eliminates such distortions.
In principle, biofeedback systems can also be used separately alongside VR therapy – however, integration within the VR Coach smart system is seamless. A compact sensor transmits data live to the therapist software, displayed directly next to the mirrored view of the VR headset. This makes it immediately visible what the patient is experiencing – and how the body responds to specific VR stimuli.
Within the software, notes on specific reactions can also be added directly. These notes are included in later data exports and help to contextualize individual responses over the course of therapy.
Measured values – such as skin conductance, finger temperature, or heart rate – can optionally be visualized directly in the VR headset as bar indicators. Patients can thus see in real time how their body reacts to certain situations. It also becomes clear whether and how quickly relaxation exercises take effect during stressful moments.
This real-time visualization is particularly valuable for therapeutic process guidance, as it allows therapists to respond immediately to changes and adjust exposure individually.
All measurement data can be exported and are automatically saved in an Excel file. There, the data can be further processed, charts can be created, and notes can be reviewed. This makes it possible to identify clear trends after several sessions, such as:
This structured documentation supports evidence-based psychotherapeutic work.
The biofeedback data from the sensor are not limited to in-practice use. Optionally, they can also be recorded via a free smartphone app. This enables use during in vivo exposure in everyday life, for example, or allows patients to take the sensor home to support relaxation exercises.
The VR Coach smart system is currently the only VR therapy system in the German-speaking region that directly integrates a biofeedback sensor and makes it usable in such a versatile way – in clinical practice, during exposure, and on the go.
