What else you should know - FAQs
How does VR therapy work?
Different Approaches in VR Therapy
In VR therapy, different concepts are used. Some providers rely on 360-degree videos that patients can watch at home with a VR headset. Other solutions are specifically used in clinical or therapeutic settings, with professional guidance and interactive content.
Professional VR Therapy Software for Clinical Use
The VR Coach smart system has been specifically developed for inpatient use in clinics and therapeutic practices. Our VR therapy software allows professionals to actively control the virtual environment and tailor it to the needs of the patients. The control is done via PC software, while the patients wear a VR headset.
Therapeutically Guided Exposure in the Virtual Space
During the session, patients move through virtual scenarios. Therapists monitor live what is happening in the headset and provide targeted instructions or prompts – for example, to confront anxiety-inducing stimuli, manage addiction, or practice coping strategies. This close interaction makes VR therapy an effective tool in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
For which indications can it be applied?
Four Core Indications in the VR Coach Software
Our VR therapy software currently covers four central mental health conditions:
– Anxiety (e.g., specific phobias or social anxiety)
– Addictions (such as alcohol, nicotine or drugs)
– Depression
– Eating disorders
Indication-Specific VR Therapy
For each of these indications, a dedicated version of the software is available, specifically tailored to the typical challenges and exposure situations. Clinics and practices can select the modules that align with their therapeutic focus.
What do I need for the implementation?
Space and Infrastructure
For the use of the VR therapy software, you need a room with some square meters of free space. Since patients actively move in the virtual scenarios – for example, to a table with alcoholic beverages – this space should also be physically available. A quiet, undisturbed environment is ideal for therapeutic work.
Stable Wi-Fi Connection for VR Headset and Software
VR therapy works best with a stable Wi-Fi connection. The laptop and wireless VR headset are connected via Wi-Fi. Our software receives regular updates, which can be automatically installed. For many clinics and practices, a separate Wi-Fi router has proven effective to operate independently of the internal clinic network.
Suitable Hardware for Professional VR Therapy
You need a powerful laptop or PC, a compatible VR headset, and optionally a biofeedback sensor. The appropriate VR therapy software is selected based on the desired indication (e.g., anxiety, addiction, OCD). We would be happy to provide you with a complete hardware package upon request.
What amount of time should be expected?
Brief Training and Technical Preparation
If the training is conducted by our team on-site, it usually takes about two hours. Afterward, the handling of the VR therapy software largely depends on the frequency of use – many users report becoming proficient after just a few sessions.
The technical preparation for a VR session usually takes no longer than five minutes. The laptop, VR headset, and software are designed to be easily and quickly started.
VR Therapy in Individual and Group Settings
In individual therapy, the VR system is usually used for 20–30 minutes per session. In group therapy sessions – for example, with our VR therapy software for addiction treatment – two blocks of 20 minutes are often used. In this case, it is recommended to connect the laptop to a TV or projector, so that other group participants can follow the interactions in the virtual world.
What is the unique selling point of VR Coach?
Unique VR Therapy for Addiction Treatment
In the field of addiction disorders, VR Coach offers the world’s only VR therapy software where patients can interact with alcohol and illegal substances, even consuming them in the virtual environment. This enables a particularly realistic and therapeutically effective confrontation.
Market-Leading Content for Anxiety and Phobias
In the treatment of anxiety, we offer the largest selection of interactive content in the German-speaking region – especially for social anxiety and specific phobias.
Innovative Features for Personalized VR Therapy
Our VR therapy software offers a variety of unique features that can be flexibly used in clinical practice:
Virtual characters can be customized with individual texts.
Biofeedback data can be displayed live in the software and directly in the VR headset.
All scenarios include triggerable actions for individualized gradual exposure increase.
Who else is working with this system?
Applications of the VR Therapy Software
Our VR therapy software is already successfully used in various clinical settings – including outpatient clinics, day hospitals, acute psychiatric units, forensic facilities, rehabilitation centers, and university hospitals. Depending on the indication, the VR Coach smart system can be flexibly adapted to therapeutic requirements.
Widespread in German Clinics
In Germany, our system is currently the most widely used solution in the field of interactive VR therapy. Large institutions particularly value the controllability by professionals, the therapeutic effectiveness, and the easy integration into existing treatment concepts.
