Virtual reality therapy is opening new possibilities in addiction treatment. One innovative method is the 3P technique (Pull – Pause – Push), developed by Prof. Dr. Steffen Moritz and his team at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
The technique involves simulating the desire to consume (Pull), pausing briefly (Pause), and then pushing the substance away with a clear gesture (Push). This retraining process helps to neurologically overwrite conditioned addictive behavior.
Since the “Push” is hard to visualize mentally, virtual reality offers an ideal platform for implementation.
With VR, patients can see the substance and act upon it in a realistic way. This leads to a more vivid, emotional experience – increasing the effectiveness of behavioral therapy. Early research suggests this may reduce cravings and consumption.
Our video shows how to use the VR Coach smart system to guide patients through the 3P technique.
Note: The video is in 2D – real VR is significantly more immersive.
The short duration of 3P makes it perfect for group therapy. By connecting the VR headset to a TV or projector, everyone can follow along.
A tip: when the Push is celebrated by the group, the emotional intensity increases – further reinforcing behavior change.
Daily VR sessions aren’t always feasible. Our suggestion:
→ Initial exposure to the method in VR
→ Followed by repetitions “in sensu,” i.e., through mental imagery
